About Riata Australian Shepherds
Riata Australian Shepherds is a family-owned and operated breeder of Australian Shepherd dogs and puppies right here in Roswell, New Mexico. Our first Australian Shepherd was given to us by an old cowboy who broke his hip after he was bucked off of a colt while working wheat pasture cattle in Clovis, NM. His Australian Shepherd, Sissy, stayed by his side until his wife came looking for him. That injury ended his career as a working cowboy. To make a long story short...we ended up with Sissy. Sissy sold us on the breed...that loyalty...that awesomeness. My husband and I grew up with horses as did our sons. Along with that came the whole gamut of competition...horse shows, rodeos, team ropings, etc. My youngest son showed market steers in FFA. With his graduation from high school, came the "now what do I do" syndrome. Let's see...competition, good bred horses, love of Australian Shepherds. It made perfect sense, why not good bred Australian Shepherds and why not show Australian Shepherds. With that, came the research. We narrowed our search down to Briarbrook Australian Shepherds in Carthage, Mo.  A very special thank you to Linda Wilson & Kimber Danner for my first show bitch, Bronze GCH Briarbrooks Driving Ms Bailey.

Okay, so now I had my first show bitch. New to the dog show world, I joined our local kennel club and was reacquainted with Jeanne Lahrman, an attorney who I worked for many years ago. Jean helped me as best as she could with learning to stack and gait Bailey, her breed was Chihuahuas. She helped me enter my first show in Roswell. Bailey won the 6-9 month class both days and that was enough to get me hooked. When Jean asked why I wanted to start showing dogs I gave her the whole spill about my love of Australian Shepherds and not wanting to give up the show ring thing, but that the best part of all was that you didn’t eat them. That was always the hard part about market steers...they became my pets. You had a black cloud hanging over your head from the time you bought the steers through the time they, hopefully, made sale or you put them on the truck to cow heaven.
